Reissued in a limited-edition production run, each box of twelve No. 2 pencils features artwork from the Viarco's mid-twentieth-century archives.
I discovered Viarco pencils while at Lisbon's A Vida Portuguesa. Beautifully packaged, Viarco pencils write (or draw) well, smell like the cedar they're made from, and feel good in the hand. Portugal's only pencil factory began in 1907 as the Fundação da Fábrica de Lápis Portugália. In 1936, Manoel Vieira de Araújo purchased the company, renamed it, and moved the factory to São João da Madeira where it is now run by Manoel Vieira de Araújo's great-grandson, José Vieira.
